Battlefy is an evolving platform — We strive for excellence and we’re always focused on making features easier to use and more productive. That said, we love to concentrate on aspects that don’t change (as Jeff Bezos would love to say as well) — This includes concentrating on improving the speed of the application, or reducing the number of steps that require a user to accomplish a goal. For example, creating a tournament.
As a core part of our platform, we enable tournament organizers to create tournaments for their communities which include teams, players, stream casters, and sponsors. In the first version of our tournament creation process, we had a 6-step flow where tournament organizers had to
Fast forward to now, we’ve made the tournament creation this simple:
With the brilliance of our product design team, we’ve been re-imagining how easy it should be to get in, preview your tournament, fill in the details, and start sharing it out. Additionally, at Battlefy, we heavily rely on data to guide our thinking around product development. Specifically, we use MixPanel. Our original tournament creation funnel saw a huge drop-off where organizers had to setup their brackets (3rd step).
In our new and improved tournament creation, we’ve specifically made the first screen encapsulate a set of 10 popular games including
We’ve curated this list based on upcoming competitive games or the number of organizers creating tournaments for specific games. In our case, League of Legends, Hearthstone, and Pokémon are all incredibly popular on our platform. Alternatively, if a user wanted to create a tournament for another game, they can easily use the omni search bar. Furthermore, when selecting a popular game, we’ve added pre-selected values for the Game Map, Number of Players, as well as, the Game Mode for League of Legends.
In the hands of a user, selecting League of Legends will auto-populate the number of players to 5 and Street Fighter IV will auto-populate the number of players to 1. Simply, the user only has to enter a name for their tournament and click “Create”.
Our design philosophy revolves around achieving goals and results. In the diagram below, you can see a huge spike in tournaments being created since the release of our re-envisioned tournament creation experience. Looking at it from a qualitative perspective, we’ve achieved the goals and results we’ve set out for a re-design of the tournament creation process: increase number of tournaments being created and increase the number of monthly active teams joining tournaments.
We’re incredibly proud of the work we do to make our users happy, as well as, we’re incredibly proud of our design team (Sophie and Michael) — Based on the graphs above, the faster a person can create a tournament, the faster they can share it out to their communities (teams, players, sponsors, stream casters) to be a part of their tournament whether it is for League of Legends, Hearthstone, or even Fart Cat — which is apparently an awesome game (rated 4 stars!).
