After a successful 2018 College League of Legends Season, Riot Games and Battlefy have established a three-year partnership to power the College League of Legends season through 2021. The multi-year partnership enables both companies to invest further in the college esports scene and continues to offer students the opportunity to be recognized as the most talented College League of Legends players across the U.S. and Canada.
“Player experience and competitive integrity are essential pillars for making League of Legends a college sport that lasts for generations. Battlefy was a huge factor in our ability to make these pillars a reality in the 2018 College LoL Season, and we’re thrilled to have them on board for the next three seasons,” said J.T. Vandenbree, League Operations Lead for Riot Games’ NA College program.
Riot Games has already announced some updates to the rule set and format for the 2019 Season here. Moreover, Battlefy will develop unique features over the course of the multi-year partnership to enhance the player and spectator experience.
Talking about the partnership, Carlos Alimurung, Battlefy’s Chief Business Officer, said “Riot Games’ College League of Legends program is the most established and comprehensive collegiate esports program in the world. It’s a privilege to partner with Riot Games on making it even more successful. The 2018 Season was a great opportunity to prove that Riot Games and Battlefy could execute a great experience for the schools and student athletes. Over the next few years, the experience will only get better.”
The 2018 Season saw a total turnout of 311 schools competing, up from 246 schools in 2017. In the 2019 season, over 80 of the competing teams will be school-supported varsity programs, and the number of partner conferences has also expanded from 2 in 2018 to 4+ in 2019. Battlefy officially began powering the College LoL Season in 2018 when the program was rebranded from “uLol Campus Series” to the current “College League of Legends Season” brand.
