Swiss Tournament Overhaul

Battlefy March 27th 2014

With Battlefy, we aim to solve the problems that tournament organizers have. We have been one of the few players in the market who had support for the Swiss tournament format. Today, we’ve launched a complete overhaul of this feature based on feedback from the communities that use it most like Hearthstone, Magic: The Gathering, and Pokémon!

Dropping Players

With longer tournaments like Swiss, some players often get discouraged or too busy to continue. This can cause issues with pairings in later rounds. You are now able to drop players after reporting a match’s score to remove them from the tournament.

Tiebreakers

After the Swiss stage, players usually move to the elimination stage of the tournament. To do this, the top 8 or other number of players from the Swiss results are moved on. It’s inevitable that there are ties in the number of points that players have making for a messy situation at this step. We now offer an extensive tie-breaker based on the system that Magic: The Gathering has tested for over 15 years to determine players’ individual positions within the standings.

Ties are broken by the average of the percentage of:

  1. Rounds your opponents won
  2. Individual games you won
  3. Rounds your opponents’ opponents won

in that order. Dropped players will retain their records so as not to cripple their opponents’ tiebreaker scores.

Review Before Next Round

The reliance on previous rounds means that automatically advancing the bracket can be disastrous when a typo has been made. Our Swiss tournament system asks you to confirm the round’s results before finalizing them and generating the next round.
