Welcome Denise to the Battlefy team!

Jaime Bueza January 9th 2018

Our design team is growing! We’re incredibly excited to welcome Denise Villanueva to the Battlefy Product Design team!

As part of the product design team, she’ll be boldly defining the Battlefy user experience. Her expertise is in information architecture, systems thinking, and product innovation.

She brings a wealth of experience from the startup scene where she was an early employee of one of Vancouver’s fastest growing startups going from 30 employees to 200+. She has seen how organizations can hyper-scale and is determined to make a huge impact on esports. In addition to that, she’s addicted to solving user-centric problems, whiteboard markers, post-it’s, and sketching.

When she’s not working on experiences, she’s either playing video games, reading, listening to true crime podcasts, or making fun of her dog.

At Battlefy, we focus on our people. We love being open and transparent because that’s how we build our teams. Check out a few of her answers to the questions we asked her!

Question: What are your favorite hobbies?

Winner winner chicken dinner

  • Playing video games (currently playing Cuphead, PUBG, Cod WWII and Rainbow 6)
  • Reading (mostly thriller/mystery, design books, graphic novels)
  • Going to concerts (mostly rap and electronic)
  • Listening to podcasts (mostly true crime like Generation Why, Sword and Scale, In the Dark, Serial, etc. and design podcasts)
  • Making fun of my goofy dog

Question: What is your favorite quote which inspires you?

“If I lose my focus, I lose.”

Question: What are your favorite esports games?

Rainbow 6 and Call of Duty

Question: What are your favourite memories in gaming?

  • I will never forget finally defeating Ultimecia in Final Fantasy 8 on PlayStation 1 after so many tries (hours and hours spent on figuring out the best possible combination of heroes, Guardian Forces, specials, items, etc.)
  • Being unbeatable at Unreal Tournament in LAN games with friends — been playing since dial-up internet.
  • Playing Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 with friends after class everyday in university.

Question:Who inspires you?

My mom. She’s the strongest person I know. The sacrifices she has made in her life moves me every time I think about it.

Question: What do you think is a defining factor in teams being successful?

In my mind, it’s a trifecta: trust, passion, and communication. Successful teams are incredibly good at over-communicating relevant and useful information with each other, they trust each other to care about the business and execute their part of the work well, and they have the drive to keep working towards the vision even when times are tough. Through all of this, cultivating a learning culture is extremely important. It levels everyone up because it encourages for a positive environment for growth.

Question: What are you obsessed about?

Designing and optimizing workflows for myself and users — wherever I go, I automatically evaluate the processes in the system and instinctively want to help these products / services to be more delightful and intentional for their end-users. It’s insanely difficult for me to not think about these things when I’m out and about. In my free time, I spend my time reading about design, business, and strategy so that I’m able to continuously get better at it. I’m also very competitive, especially with myself. I want to grow personally and professionally in everything that I do and every interaction I have.

Question: What is your favourite book and why?

Death with Interruptions by José Saramago is my favourite book because it’s explores the idea of death being an entity who may choose to do other things and maybe even fall in love, rather than being an event that happens to humanity. My close #2 is probably Blindness by José Saramago as well because he just writes about interesting themes and tells the story beautifully.

Welcome to the team,

Denise Villanueva!

Cheers,
Jaime
